South African weekend paper goes tabloid

Weekend Witness, the Saturday edition of South Africa's oldest newspaper, will switch to a tabloid format beginning Saturday, BizCommunity reported Monday.
The new format is aimed at being easier for readers to handle and read. Additionally, stories will be “livelier ... shorter ... and punchier,” to better fit into readers' busy weekend schedules, according to BizCommunity.
Dave Erasmus, GM of the Witness Division of The Natal Witness Group said that the new format is also aimed at attracting new readers, and especially women and younger readers, as research has shown both groups have been found to favour a more compact format, according to a BizCommunity report.
The paper will continue its local focus, and also add features for young readers, as well as allow readers to contribute to the newspaper more.
