Mergers and acquisitions still thrive in the first quarter, even though the economy is shaky, according to the latest data from the investment bank Jordan, Edmiston Group, Inc.
There were 202 transactions in total in the first three months of 2008, with the value totaled $13.4 billion. This marks a five-percent increase of total dollar value from the same period in 2007, while the number of transactions slid by two percent. More

The Wall Street Journal will roll out a U.S. edition in the United Kingdom beginning April 16, which means that readers in London will have access to the paper several hours before it is released in the United States, the Guardian reported Wednesday.
The UK edition will be sold in addition to the Wall Street Journal Europe from about 250 news agents in London, the West End and Canary Wharf, as well as Heathrow and City airports, according to the Guardian. More

Jared Kushner, owner of the weekly New York Observer, is among those contemplating buying or partnering with Newsday, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.
Kushner, son of real-estate developer Charles Kushner, declined to comment on the report, which was based on “a person familiar with the situation,” according to the article. More

Trinity Mirror Plc has bought UK Web design and development consultancy agency Rippleffect Studio in an effort to branch out revenue streams and increase interest in sport and leisure media, the UK Association of Online Publishers (AOP) reported Wednesday.
Trinity Mirror bought Rippleffect for an initial £3.2 million, plus an additional £2.6 million, contingent on success over the upcoming three years, according to journalism.co.uk. More

The Coventry Telegraph is the most recent Trinity Mirror regional title to experience an online makeover, the HoldtheFrontPage.co.uk reported Tuesday.
A large piece of coventrytelegraph.net has been set aside for nostalgia and old pictures of the city. Regular visitors will also notice a new section dedicated to yesteryear in England’s Midlands city. More

De Telegraaf, the Amsterdam daily, continues to claim the highest circulation in the Netherlands during the last quarter of 2007. However, the paper experienced a drop in daily circulation in the fourth quarter, to 703,000 from 738, 000 copies a day, compared with the previous quarter, Thomson Financial News reported Tuesday.
In the fourth quarter of De Telegraaf’s circulation, it expanded slightly, from the 699,000 papers circulated compared with the same period in 2006, according to HOI figures. More

Weekend Witness, the Saturday edition of South Africa's oldest newspaper, will switch to a tabloid format beginning Saturday, BizCommunity reported Monday.
The new format is aimed at being easier for readers to handle and read. Additionally, stories will be “livelier ... shorter ... and punchier,” to better fit into readers' busy weekend schedules, according to BizCommunity. More

Revenues from newspaper circulation in Canada rose 1.5 percent to $862 million in 2006, despite a rise in free daily newspapers and increasing free online news sources, which have cut into print circulation for paid dailies, according to a Statistics Canada report out Tuesday.
A large part of the increase, however is due to a change in accounting practices, in which a number of publishing houses reported gross circulation revenues instead of circulation revenues net of distribution expenses, Canwest News Service reported Tuesday. More
