Advertising revenue for domestic Canadian newspapers rose to $3.98 billion in 2006, up 2.7 percent from the previous year, according to the latest report from Statistics Canada.
Daily newspapers generated $2.85 billion revenues in advertising, while community papers brought in $1.13 billion, Media in Canada reported.
Broken down by geographic areas, Ontario marked a 5.1 percent growth in operating expenses, depleting profit margins for 2006 to 10 percent, compared with 7.4 percent one year previously. In Western Canada, however, operating revenues was up 3.9 percent, almost double the 2.1 percent increase in Ontario, according to Media in Canada.
In Atlantic Canada, profit margins were 12.3 percent, and in Quebec, 13.5 percent, Media Canada reported.
Although growth among Canada's newspapers was very glamourous, it performed much better than its American counterpart, where ad revenue reportedly dropped 7.9 percent to $45.38 billion.
