Le Monde may cut staff

New management at France's Le Monde told staff members Friday that 130 jobs, which includes 25 percent of journalists, may be cut in a plan to keep the paper going after heavy losses, Reuters reported over the weekend.

“To reject it would surely deny us any chance of success and would put the future of the group in danger,” wrote Eric Fottorino, the recently appointed chief executive of the Le Monde Group, and his deputy David Guiraud, in a statement posted on Le Monde's Web site.

Ad revenue up 2.7% for Canadian newspapers

Advertising revenue for domestic Canadian newspapers rose to $3.98 billion in 2006, up 2.7 percent from the previous year, according to the latest report from Statistics Canada.

Daily newspapers generated $2.85 billion revenues in advertising, while community papers brought in $1.13 billion, Media in Canada reported.

Nielsen acquires audience research firm

The Nielsen Company announced Monday it has agreed to acquire New York-based IAG Research for US$225 million in cash, another acquisition underlining its growing interest in advertising measurement.

IAG, which reported more than $35 million in revenue last year, measures the effectiveness of television and online advertising for marketers and networks, the New York Times reported.

Report: British online ad spend to outpace TV by 2009

The Internet will outpace television as the biggest advertising medium in the United Kingdom by the end of 2009, according to a report published by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB), PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Advertising Research Centre.

Britain has the most developed online ad market in the world, which was worth £2.8 billion ($5.6 billion) in 2007, Reuters reported.

Google Earth partners with New York Times

Google Earth has added a new layer to its software, in which a person using Google Earth can also view New York Times news linked with the region they are viewing, CNET News reported Monday.

“Placemarks” will pop up on maps showing where news is happening, and by showing the New York Times layer in the software, a window will make a month's worth of headlines viewable, according to Google’s LatLong blog.

Mirror to combine print, online sales teams

Mirror Group Newspapers is set to raise its revenue from its online platforms, expanding advertising opportunities for clients by combining its online and print advertising sales teams, Brand Republic reported Tuesday.

The UK newspaper group is reportedly looking at completely integrating its print and Web site advertising sales teams, which has been predicted to begin in June. Ad sales staff will then cross-sell sell print, digital and mobile platforms.

Adelson looks to buy Ma'ariv

U.S. billionaire Sheldon Adelson is once again seeking to buy Israeli daily Ma'ariv, Newspaper Innovation reported Monday.

Adelson has tried to buy the newspaper twice in the last two years, and also owns Israeli free daily Israel today, and did own free newspaper Israeli, which closed in 2007.
