Two Spanish-language newspapers published in Texas will be merged into one, home-delivered publication beginning May 2, according to its parent company, Star-Telegram.
La Estrella, the 14-year-old free weekly published by the Star-Telegram, will be merged with La Estrella En Casa, another free weekly launched last May and delivered to about 100,000 households in Dallas-Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
Gary Wortel, Star-Telegram Publisher, said Monday that the combined title will cover the local news content of La Estrella, as well as the entertainment and cultural stories of La Estella En Casa, according to the article posted by MediaInfoCenter.
"La Estrella En Casa is doing very well. What we're finding is the home-delivery product is what advertisers are looking for ," Wortel told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
La Estrella started as a weekly insert in the Star-Telegram, and evolved into a biweekly stand-alone publication and then expanded to five days a week. It returned to twice weekly and then once-a-week last year. It is mostly distributed on newspaper racks, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
According to Wortel, Star-Telegram is still trying to find out how Spanish-language papers evolve when all papers are experiencing a hard time, struggling against declining ad revenues and stagnant or shrinking circulation.
Some La Estrella staff members will be reassigned within the Star-Telegram, he added.
