Americans cannot stop text messaging

Data revenues at U.S. mobile service providers boosted to US$23 billion last year, and accounted for 17 percent of all mobile revenues, according to the data from CTIA.
Compared to 2006, total revenues marked a 53 percent increase last year.
The biggest chunk of the revenue came from text messaging. In December 2007 alone, about 50 billion messages were sent, according to the research firm eMarketer.
On the other hand, multimedia messaging is also growing quickly. During the second half of 2007, four billion multimedia text messages were sent, versus 2.7 billion in the same period one year ago.
U.S. mobile subscribers increased 22 million last year, according to eMarketer. As of December 2007, there were 255 million subscribers in total.
"Today more than 84 percent of America has embraced the mobile revolution, and the survey results clearly show that mobile is the communications tool of choice for consumers," said Steve Largent, CEO of CTIA, according to eMarketer.
