Uniques up for over 80% of top U.S. newspaper sites

More than 80 percent of the top 30 U.S. newspaper Web sites saw an increase in unique users in June, compared to the same time last year, according to Nielsen Online data, Editor & Publisher reported Wednesday.
Of the top 30 sites, New York's Daily News Online had the largest growth, with user numbers jumping 109 percent from June 2007, to 3.8 million.
Newsday increased by 73 percent, to three million unique users. Village Voice Media augmented by 70 percent to 2.2 million, E&P reported.
Unique users to Mlive.com, a site for Advance Newspapers' Michigan properties, increased 80 percent, to 1.5 million, according to E&P.
Other newspaper sites that boosted their unique users since June 2008 also include: The Star Tribune (up 55 percent, to 1.8 million), the Wall Street Journal (52 percent, to 6.4 million) and The New York Times (up 41 percent, to 17.7 million).
Smaller changes were seen at USA Today, which increased its unique visitors by 12 percent, to 9.6 million, and The Washington Post, which gained 11 percent more users, to nine million in June, according to E&P.
But all news wasn't good, as a number of newspaper Web sites saw a declined in unique users.
The Houston Chronicle fell by 44 percent, to 2.6 million, while Ottoway Newspapers decreased by 30 percent, to 1.5 million. Smaller declines were seen at the SF Gate/ San Francisco Chronicle (8 percent fall to 3.6 million uniques) and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (down 4 percent, to 2.7 million).
