The Newspaper Consortium aims to deliver online advertising from newspapers at a local level, while the 779 newspapers involved in the deal provide headlines to Yahoo!, which it places across its properties, linking back to the original articles on the newspapers' Web sites.

“Silver will be the public face of the consortium, which has partnered with Yahoo! on recruitment advertising, and is expected to soon launch a new toolset for targeting newspaper Web site users,” E&P reported.

Silver will also advise member companies on how to best maximise online revenue, while also heading up management and oversight of agreements between Yahoo! and the Consortium's member companies, MarketWatch reported.

“Mike is widely respected across the broad media landscape because of his success developing and executing a wide range of innovative digital media initiatives,” said George Irish, president of Hearst Newspapers and chairman of the Consortium's board of directors, according to MarketWatch.

Silver started with the Tribune Co. as a reporter, and throughout his career has led multimedia initiatives, such as the company's initial investment in AOL, according to E&P.
