Competition watchdog investigates 'Kangaroo'

Google has said it will back Project Kangaroo, which plans to launch an ad-supported Web site that will give users access to current programmes on UK television stations ITV and Channel 4, as well as all BBC programmes a week after their original air date, the Times Online reported.
The Competition Commission is investigating Kangaroo, but Google has said the online media market is already very competitive.
Google stated it “does not expect this joint venture to have any negative impact on competition or customers,” as entry into the online media market is not difficult, the Times Online reported Wednesday.
The Commission will rule on whether Kangaroo will be allowed to proceed with its online video plans by the end of 2008. The Office of Fair Trading has already stated the venture could cause a “concentration of these important and competing libraries of UK TV programming,” as the three broadcasters make up about 70 percent of TV viewing in the United Kingdom, according to the Times Online.
