Australian papers The Age and The Sunday Age will cut between 45 and 55 editorial jobs in the next two months, according to acting editor-in-chief Paul Ramadge Wednesday, Asia Media reported.
The cuts, making up between 11 and 14 percent of the publications' editorial staff, are part of the plan to cut 550 workers outlined by Fairfax Media couple weeks ago.
This decision came due to the declining revenues in classified for metropolitan daily newspapers, Asia Media reported.
“The redundancy program would be completed in eight weeks, along with a restructuring of editorial operations,” Ramadge told staff, according to The Age.
Staff unanimously condemned the cuts in a meeting as a “short-term response to long-term challenges that undermines the quality journalism produced by The Age for 150 years,” Asia Media reported.
