Staff from UK newspapers Liverpool Daily Post and Echo began a campaign to discourage Trinity Mirror, the papers' owner, from relocating printing to Oldham, Greater Manchester. The move, scheduled for the end of 2009, may affect almost 100 positions, reported BBC News on Saturday.
A petition was launched in Liverpool, calling upon the public, government and local parliament members to help prevent the relocation. The papers may have historical value to the town since they were first published in the area nearly 150 years ago.
Trinity Mirror is spending £7.5 million to establish the printing unit in Oldham and will employ new colour presses that have been released in December last year, according to BBC News.
"It's time the company listens to its readers' concerns and re-directs its investment in Liverpool to protect the future of the workforce,” said union Unite’s Regional Officer Paul Finegan, according to BBC News."We urge Trinity Mirror to have meaningful talks with Unite so we can examine every possibility to retain production on Merseyside."
According to BBC News, Trinity Mirror also recently said that it would cut back 30 jobs as part of a restructuring plan in north-western England due to “challenging market conditions.”
