Bebo sends messages into space

Social networking site Bebo has sent messages and multimedia content from 501 of its members into outer space, Metro.co.uk reported Thursday. Regular users and famous personalities, such as UK’s Radio One DJ Scott Mills, got a chance to broadcast text and images that they thought “best reflects life on Earth.”
Earlier this year, the social network teamed up with production firm RDF Digital to launch a competition for the A Message From Earth initiative, wrote Pocket-lint.co.uk Thursday. The chosen content was transferred early Thursday morning from a radio telescope in Ukraine.
The final destination for the messages is the planet Gliese 581C, which is nearly 129 trillion miles and 21 years away from Earth, according to Metro.co.uk.
“You guys have officially made history by creating the first democratically chosen message to be sent into space. After 1.7 seconds your messages had passed the moon and now they are on their way to Saturn,” said Bebo Mission Specialist Alice Levine to the users, who were picked through votes.
The social networking site's user engagement on the project did not end when the messages were sent. Bebo will continue to update users as the messages make their way through space.
