Google to critics: We 'respect copyright law'

Google cares about copyright protections, and operates consistently with copyright law, Josh Cohen, Google News content specialist told the Toronto Star in a Q&A Friday.

Speaking at the 2008 Canadian Newspaper Association/Canadian Community Newspapers Association conference in Toronto, Cohen “delivered a message of peace and partnership,” Toronto News reporter Brett Popplewell reported Friday, telling the audience that although news content is “bigger than it's ever been ... how people are getting it is going through tremendous change.”

Associated Press inks copyright protection deal

The Associated Press will begin using a new copyright protection system for online users of its content, called iCopyright, Journalism.co.uk reported Thursday.

Online copyright rights service iCopyright will help to create a Web-based licensing system for AP content.

ACAP Answers Its Critics

Since the recent launch of ACAP, the new standard to protect the intellectual property of anyone publishing on the Web, the blogosphere has been full of comments about it -- and not all of them have been polite.

In addition to a great deal of supportive commentary, the Automated Content Access Protocol has faced an inevitable flurry of criticism. ACAP and its supporters, which includes the World Association of Newspapers, are facing the issues head-on and answering their critics.

Google UK has denied forming secret deals with several UK publishers to supply content to its Google News service. A report in the Sunday Herald claimed that Google was understood to have reached deals with several large UK news groups over carrying their content on Google News.
