New York Times expands distribution to Santa Fe location

The New York Times announced an agreement with The Santa Fe New Mexican on Thursday to begin printing the paper at the plant in Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States, the newspapers stated in a press release.

The agreement, beginning in early October, will allow The Times to expand its presence in Santa Fe, through weekday and Sunday newsstands and home delivery.

Japan’s largest newspapers merge production

Looking to cost-cuts, Japan’s two largest newspaper publishers, Asahi Shimbun Co. and Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings, will merging their printing facilities, Editor & Publisher reported Wednesday.

The companies are asking other publishers to join their consolidating measure.

High newsprint costs in Thailand cause cover price increases

As newsprint costs increase and the popularity of online outlets grows, Thailand's newspapers and magazines are augmenting their cover prices, Brand Republic Asia reported.

The Bangkok Post raised its daily price from 25 to 30 baht (US$0.90), after newsprint costs increased from US$550 last year to $900 in 2008. Media Transasia Thailand, the local publisher of magazines OK! and Seventeen, is also expected to raise prices by almost 10 percent, and other media firms are predicted to do the same in 2009.

Trinity Mirror urged to not relocate printing site

Staff from UK newspapers Liverpool Daily Post and Echo began a campaign to discourage Trinity Mirror, the papers' owner, from relocating printing to Oldham, Greater Manchester. The move, scheduled for the end of 2009, may affect almost 100 positions, reported BBC News on Saturday.

A petition was launched in Liverpool, calling upon the public, government and local parliament members to help prevent the relocation. The papers may have historical value to the town since they were first published in the area nearly 150 years ago.

Transcontinental to print Globe and Mail

Transcontinental Inc. will print the Toronto-based Globe and Mail for 18 years, according to a new contract, valued at C$1.7 billion, Editor & Publisher reported.

The Globe and Mail took competitive bids from Canadian printers for 18 months, and the new contract will begin in 2010.

Chicago Sun-Times invests in printing, workflow systems

The Chicago Sun-Times, although hit hard by the advertising slump and poor U.S. economy, is investing in its has printing and workflow systems, Editor & Publisher reported.

The tabloid-style newspaper has purchased nine prepress systems and workflow components from Belgium-based Agfa Graphics.

Newsprint cost increases cut into growth in India

Increasing newsprint costs in India mean many publications are postponing launches, as well as raising advertising rates, Rediff News reported Friday.

The price of waste newspaper, which is recycled to make newsprint, was up between 30 and 40 percent during the first quarter. Costs of pulp, power and coal are also up.

Baltimore Sun to print Washington Times

The Baltimore Sun Media Group on Wednesday announced an agreement to print The Washington Times beginning in September, which will help The Sun offset some of its advertising revenue declines, the paper reported Thursday.

The Times, with 100,000 copies produced a day, plans to shut down its printing plant in Washington, and transfer the work to The Sun's Port Covington printing plant, known as Sun Park.

Rising paper, printing costs squeeze Vietnamese publishers

Publishing houses across Vietnam are having to raise cover prices or reduce the number of copies they print due to a sharp increase in paper prices and printing fees, VietNamNet Bridge reported Thursday.

Paper and printing now account for 25 percent to 30 percent of publishing costs.

MagCloud, print-on-demand service for magazine publishing launched

Magazine publishing has taken a leap towards the future with the beta launch of MagCloud, a print-on-demand service. MagCloud’s method will help improve control and revenue in the field of magazine publishing, Folio Mag reported.

MagCloud lets users upload PDF pages and takes care of everything else like printing, mailing and subscription. Derek Powazek and HP Labs developed the software.

Idaho Press Tribune to print Idaho Statesman

The Idaho Press Tribune will begin printing the Idaho Statesman, the two most recent U.S. newspapers to cut costs by sharing a printing plant, Fox 12 News reported Thursday.

Other newspapers in the United States and around the world are taking the same measure to offset rising printing costs and lower income due to a poor ad market.

Illinois Tool Works to buy newspaper equipment maker

Diversified industrial manufacturer Illinois Tool Works announced Thursday it will buy newspaper handling equipment maker Quipp Inc., Reuters reported.

The deal is expected to be between US$6.4 million and $8.4 million, and the final price will be decided based on Quipp's cash, cash equivalents and debts.

U.S. newspapers struggle with rising newsprint costs

As demand for the paper newspapers are printed on shrinks, the cost of that paper is on the rise in the United States, The Wall Street Journal reported last week.

Paper companies spent much of 2007 idling the machinery used to make the paper, and sometimes even having to sell that machinery. This decrease in supply means paper companies have more power over pricing their products, and have turned to raising prices in the face of shrinking demand and revenues as readers turn to online.

The Chicago Tribune confirmed Friday it will terminate remote printing of its Midwest edition this spring, shrinking its distribution area, Editor & Publisher reported Friday.

Its Midwest edition has been printed by Capital Newspapers in Madison, Wisc., and The News Gazette in Champaign, Ill.

Printworks expansion protects 100 jobs

A printworks expansion project costing Newsquest and its Herald publishers four million pounds is expected to protect more than 100 jobs, AllmediaScotland reported Friday.

The investment in the Cambuslang, Scotland plant will go to two new tower print units and revamping a third tower, which enables the plant to produce full-colour, 128-page tabloid-sized newspapers for Newsquest rival Associated Newspapers. Associated recently signed an agreement stating it will continue printing its Scottish Daily Mail and Scottish Mail on Sunday at the Cambuslang plant until 2022.
