European dailies grew in number of titles from '01 to '05

European dailies, including both paid and free, grew from 2001 to 2005 in terms of number of titles, according to World Press Trends 2006, SFN's New Print Products reported.

 

However, in terms of circulation, paid dailies dropped from 2001 to 2005, while free title circulation nearly doubled.

In 2001, there were 2,004 paid and 39 free dailies in Europe. Overall circulation was more than 140 million, with 8 million from free and nearly 97 million from paid.

 

In 2005, the number of paid and free titles were up to 2,280 and 87, respectively. Circulation of free dailies increased more than two-fold to 16 million, while that of paid declined to 90 million, according to the report, New Print Products, released by SFN and the World Association of Newspapers.
