Presstime becomes online only

Presstime, the monthly magazine of the Newspaper Association of America, last week informed its subscribers that the May edition would be the last physical copy of the publication. Instead Presstime would continue in an online form on the association's Website, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

"No one wanted to close down Presstime," John F. Sturm, president and chief executive of the association, said. "This was purely an economic decision -- saving in excess of $500,000 annually -- for a trade association that, by the end of this year, will have halved the amount of dues it collects from its members and cut its staff by two-thirds."
The association and Presstime survive off of subscriptions to the organisation and the magazine by newspapers. However, as American newspapers battle through industry and economic crises, hundreds of papers have dropped their subscriptions. This includes major newspaper groups such as MediaNews Group and Lee Enterprises. The association has cut its fees in an attempt to stop the emigration, according to the New York Times.

The American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Magazine Publishers of America have also been hurt by the departure of members. Both organisations canceled their annual conferences as attendance was set to be well down. The Newspaper Associations own conference had a much reduced turn out.

The association had formerly played the role of newspaper advisory on industry issues of technology, business and law. However these roles have been reduced with the declining subscription base.

Presstime was first published in 1969 and has a circulation of around 20,000.
