Observer staff propose alternative to newspaper's closure

Posted by Simon Day on August 6, 2009 at 11:17 AM
Staff at The Observer are taking action to save the Sunday newspaper from closure by parent company the Guardian Media Group. According to a report in the London Evening Standard on Thursday, journalists at The Observer are looking to produce a much smaller publication.

The new format could see the removal of the City section and the travel supplement. The paper cut its TV magazine last month.
The Observer's journalists are hoping reader loyalty will help keep the paper open, and were dismayed when it was revealed that a magazine prototype was shown to the Scott Trust, the owner of the GMG, as a possible new redesign for the paper, according to the Evening Standard.

Industry analysts have said they believe it is unlikely the GMG will completely abandon the Sunday newspaper market. Alternatives also include changing the Sunday publication to one under a Guardian title, the Evening Standard reported.

The Sunday Times reported the GMG is contemplating the closure of The Observer in an attempt to save money after posting a £89.8 million annual loss last week. The GMG bought The Observer in 1993.
