Google, NYT & WashPost launch Living Stories project

Google yesterday launched a project updating articles by The New York
Times and the Washington Post as the stories unfold, The Associated
Press reported. The project, titled Living Stories, aims to
maximise the use of Web technology in the delivery of news by
traditional media organisations, according to a Google press release.
"We believe it's just as important to experiment with how news organizations can take advantage of the web to tell stories in new ways -- ways that simply aren't possible offline," said Google engineer Neha Singh on the search engine's official blog, credited to product manager Josh Cohen. Cohen, through Google spokesman Chris Gaither, declined further comment on the project.

No money will reportedly change hands nor will advertising accompany the content, Cohen's blog states.
Nevertheless, it is clear that the task of continually updating news stories entails considerable manpower and expertise in new media -- both of which might be lacking at newspapers gutted by the recent industry collapse.
No response to the initiative from the world's wire services was immediately forthcoming, though Living Stories essentially duplicates or supplants the immediate replenishment of emerging facts as has been the stock-in-trade of agencies such as The Associated Press and Reuters.
Living Stories portends to bring newspapers rooted in the print format in line with the new industry standard of continual updates set by such electronic publications as TechCrunch. Living Stories would also appear to prepare these same newspapers to engage live with readers on certain stories using Google Wave, another recent initiative of the search engine giant.
Google Wave is an interactive platform, recently launched though still in development, which permits real-time, multi-party communications in a variety of data formats, including text, maps, and images. RedEyeChicago and Die Welt are among the few newspapers worldwide to integrate Google Wave in its coverage.
