Jonathan Bulkeley, the CEO of the technology's developer Scanbuy, said the National Post is looking to offer the service to advertisers, letting them provide further information about products and services.

"We're supporting hundreds of scans per day in the United States," Bulkeley told MediaPost. "The codes are put on t-shirts and other marketing items to promote brands."

Scanbuy has announced deals with telecommunication companies Alltel, which has now been bought buy Verizon, and Sprint. Nike has used the bar codes in Mexico and Fanta in Scandinavia, according to Bulkeley.
