Bartz named Yahoo! CEO

Carol Bartz, former chief executive of design software maker Autodesk and a director at Cisco, was appointed CEO of Yahoo! on Tuesday, The New York Times reported.
Bartz told analysts that although Yahoo! is facing challenges, the company also has a "huge opportunity," thanks to its well-known brand and position in the market. Bartz said she plans to turn the company's attention outward, and experts believe her appointment signals big change for the company.

"I think Yahoo has unfortunately been battered in the last year and that has caused it to look internally and be protective," Bartz said, according to The New York Times. "That's nonsense for such a great company and such a great franchise."
Bartz succeeds Jerry Yang, who served as Yahoo! CEO for 18 months. Susan L. Decker, chief deputy to Yang, has also resigned, and will leave the company after a transitional period.

Most of Bartz's experience has been in software and hardware making businesses, such as Autodesk, Sun Microsystems and Cisco Systems, and she has no experience with media or advertising, some analysts pointed out. However, Bartz told analysts she has the intelligence to learn new businesses, which is what she did at both Autodesk and Sun, The New York Times reported.
Bartz will also oversee the Yahoo! Newspaper Consortium, which is a joint venture between newspaper companies and the online portal.
