Guardian: Russian billionaire tried to buy London paper

Russian billionaire and former KGB agent Alexander Lebedev approached the London Evening Standard with intentions of buying it, MediaGuardian reported Thursday.
Daily Mail & General Trust's chairman, Lord Rothermere, "rebuffed" the offer, which is believed to have been made at the end of 2008, according to MediaGuardian.

Lebedev also has part ownership in Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta.
MediaGuardian reported that it is understood some DMGT executives did want to sell the Standard to Lebedev, but "Rothermere personally vetoed a deal."
