Austrian newspaper's marketing ploy costs more than bargained for

An Austrian daily recently sparked a lawsuit by a national transit authority when it offered free highway toll passes to new subscribers for at-home delivery of its print edition, The Austrian Times reported Friday.

But the transit authority, known as Asfinag, dropped the suit Friday when Österreich made a partial payment on the passes it gave away.
"Österreich and Asfinag have returned to regular cooperation," newspaper executive Wolfgang Zekert was quoted by The Austrian Times as saying following payment of €1.5 million.

A spokesperson for the agency said it withdrew enforcement contingent on a promise to pay the balance for the remaining permits, valued at €76.20 each, by year's end, plus any interest then accrued.
