MediaNews Group tests printing scheme

U.S. newspaper company MediaNews Group is testing a specially-developed home printer which could potentially be used for reduced printing and delivery, Bill Mitchell reported on Poynter Online. The Los Angeles Daily News, along with San Jose's Mercury News and The Denver Post, plan to conduct tests of the new printer.
MediaNews' paper The Detroit News is set to eliminate delivery four days a week starting the end of March. MediaNews exec Mark Winkler explained the decision, telling The Denver Post that the company's biggest expense is printing and delivering the paper, therefore "eliminating it four days a week would be significant." Winkler noted that 65 to 70 percent of the paper's revenues are from sales on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, which is why printing will continue on those days.
Home printing is just one of the alternatives to home delivery, MediaNews Group suggested, as customised news can also be sent to computers or cell phones.
