Australian online employment advertiser Seek is planning to make acquisitions in the eduction and training sectors and therefore steal more classified market share from newspapers, The Australian reported.

Seek reported a 13 percent net profit rise, to A$36.6 million for the six months leading to December, beating market expectations by more than 20 percent.

U.S. newspaper publishers marked a 29 percent decline of their print and online advertising revenue in the second quarter, which is steeper than the previous period, according to the data from Newspaper Association of America, Bloomberg reported.

 

Ad revenue was down from $9.6 billion in the first quarter last year to $6.82 billion year-over-year, while ad sales fell 28 percent in the first quarter to $6.62 billion.

 

A study conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) predicts losses of up to $13 billion in revenue by 2013 for the North American newspaper industry Editor & Publisher reported.

Declines in advertising revenue are seen as the main source of losses in the print news business, which the study estimates will drop by 32.7 percent over the next three years.

PWC's Global Entertainment and Media Outlook report found that the American newspaper industry is suffering more than its neighbor to the North, where slower decreases in circulation and increased readership of free dailies has helped the Canadian industry.

A study conducted by the Pew Research Center found that increased use of online classified sites, including Craigslist, has lead to drops in classified ad revenue for newspapers, Cnet News reported.

The Pew Center reported that 49 percent of internet users claimed to use online classified sites, a 27 percent increase from 2005.

Craigslist's "erotic services" sections will be eliminated and replaced with a new "adult" page. The posts there will be reviewed by company employees before publication, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Current erotic ads will be phased out of the site as they expire over the next seven days, which will put an end to what Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan calls "an Internet brothel" and "an illegal and dangerous place."

In a move to  simplify and better integrate the print and online marketplace, E.W. Scripps Company will adopt a new print and online classified ad platform, thanks to its partnership with online classified ad company AdPay, Media Week reported Thursday.

The AdPay network offers classified and display ads integrated with retail inventory as well as Web-to-Web, Web-to-print and print-to-Web capabilities, said Rusty Coats, vice president of interactive for Scripps.

By June 1, Scripps expects 19 of its newspapers to be on the AdPay platform. The sites will aggregate searches of content from other sites as well as combine the order-entry system for both print and online ads, Media Week reported. Ad placement will also be facilitated by the fact that they can simultaneously be added to the Web site, newspaper and AdPay's national classified network.

As much as 70 percent of revenue at Australian newspapers come from national and retail advertisers, which is good news for newspapers not wanting to rely on the slowing classified advertising sector, The Australian reported Wednesday.

Newspaper readership in Australia has remained high, with The Sydney Morning Herald and The Daily Telegraph penetrating 68 percent of the Sydney market, Brendan Hopkins, chairman of industry group The Newspaper Works and chief executive of APN News & Media, told The Australian.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin merged its business and local news section on Monday, and also began printing one page of stock and mutual fund listings instead of two, all to create a separate section for its classified advertising, Pacific Business News reported. Previously, classifieds had been housed in the business section.

Cutting the stock listings in half "(reflects) the move by investors to the Internet for market quotes," said the Hawaiian paper's editor, Frank Bridgewater. The paper will also add two pages of "analysis, lists and highlights" to its business section on Sunday, due to heightened interest in economic news amid the stormy financial markets around the globe.
