The New York Times Co. posted its quarterly revenue up slightly, the first increase in quarterly revenue since the quarter of 2007, as digital advertising increased at double digits and helped offset the downturn of print advertising, AFP reported.

Its second-quarter revenue increased to $589.6 million from $584.5 million one year ago. Net income was down a little, to $32 million, or 21 cents a share, from $39.1 million, or 27 cents, year-over-year, according to a company statement.

 

The New York Times plans to set up a public beta site on which it can experiment and test its ideas and applications before they go live on the newspaper's website, AdAge.com reported. The beta initiative will begin in July or August, and will be called "Beta620," wherein 620 refers to the paper's street address on Eighth Avenue in New York.

The new platform will be an examination ground for The Times to study and understand the impact of its features on readers and advertisers before they are implemented, thereby facilitating more user involvement with its products, while eliminating the clutter of new products on its main site, according to a blog posted on MediaBistro.com.

As part of its effort to appeal to a wider New York audience, the Wall Street Journal will expand once again, this time by adding a new weekly lifestyle and leisure section, AdAge reported yesterday. The 15-17 page section is scheduled to debut this autumn, and is expected to run on Saturdays.

The move by the WSJ to reach more readers will also place it in direct weekend competition with The New York Times, which dominates on weekends and derives a significant part of its revenue from the advertising-loaded Sunday edition, DailyFinance.com reported. The Journal has already entered into a war with The Times on the local front, with its recently launched Metro section for New Yorkers, soon followed by an ad campaign directly aimed at its rival with slogans like, "Ahead of the times."

The total daily minutes spent on Facebook reached more than three billion in February 2009, up from 1.1 billion from one year ago, according to data provided by the social networking site. About 15 million users update their statuses on a daily basis, almost quadruple the number one year ago, SFN's World Digital Media Trends 2009 reported.

News Corp.'s Wall Street Journal will have a new section focusing on New York area news in April, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch said in a speech before the Real Estate Board of New York, Bloomberg reported.

The move is aimed to compete against The New York Times on local readers and major advertisers, according to paidContent. Even though Murdoch did not mention by name, he said "a certain other New York daily has essentially stopped covering the city the way it once did and instead has focused on being more of a national newspaper interested mostly in prizes."

The New York Times may soon begin to charge for online content. "We're within weeks of a decision," Executive Editor Bill Keller said Saturday.

The newspaper's management expected to make a decision by late summer, but are still weighing the complicated issue. Although charging for some online content would bring in subscription revenues, that potential revenue could cut into the millions in advertising dollars, as online advertisers want to reach the largest amount of readers as possible, Clark Hoyt reported.

The sale of the Boston Globe by The New York Times Co.will be plagued by the potential cost and time involved with contract negotiations with the newspaper's largest union, according to legal and business analysts, Boston.com reported Wednesday.

The Globe yesterday reported that the Times Co. is looking to sell the newspaper it acquired in 1993, a consequence the company threatened should it not find $20 million in concessions from its unions. On Monday, the Boston Newspapers Guild rejected the pay and benefit cuts offered by the Times Co. and said it would take legal action against the subsequent 23 percent pay cut enforced by the Times Co.

The New York Times has named Jennifer Preston as its new "social media" editor, the AFP reported.

An internal memo issued by the Times detailed Preston's duties, including "expanding the use of social media networks and publishing platforms to improve New York Times journalism and deliver it to readers."

The New York Times on Tuesday unveiled its "Times Wire," an up to the minute live feed of the newspapers articles and blogs as they are published, AFP reported Wednesday.

Users of Times Wire can select which aspects of the newspaper's content the live feed will present to them, allowing the reader to focus on the topics of their choosing. The live feed will then link the reader to the nytimes.com article.
