USA Today announced plans for the most extensive reorganisation in its 28-year history, including cutting 9 percent of its staff and shifting its emphasis to digital media operations, according to the New York Times' blog.

Company spokesman Ed Cassidy said it plans to shed its workforce by 130 employees across the company, Toronto Sun reported.

 

Gannett Co.'s USA Today has added a daily crossword and customisable market and stock listings to its free iPad application, Editor & Publisher reported yesterday.

"We've been thrilled with reader reaction to our App and think these enhancements will be well received," president and publisher of USA Today David L. Hunke said. The first version, which was launched in April, has been downloaded more than 800,000 times, USA Today revealed.

USA Today launched a new trade ad campaign with the theme "What America Wants" yesterday to highlights its connection with readers, BtoBonline reported.

The new multimedia trade campaign targets advertisers and media buyers by emphasising the continued leadership of Gannett Co.'s flagship newspaper in establishing a connection with readers, and aims to position USA Today as "The Nation's Newspaper" by creating value for its advertisers, according to its press release. The "What America Wants" campaign focuses on the newspapers' "balanced and unpretentious reporting" on issues important to Americans, Editor & Publisher reported.

"While other media brands like to claim that they are telling their readers what they think they should know, USA Today prides itself on writing about what our readers actually want to know," David L. Hunke, president and publisher of USA Today, told E&P.

USA Today and Trinidad & Tobago's Newsday have entered into partnership and together launched the Trinidad and Tobago edition of USA Today, T&T's Newsday reported.

The first Trinidad and Tobago edition of the USA Today was printed yesterday in the El Socorro Pressroom and distributed to attendees at an event created around the new partnership. The new edition will be distributed directly to subscribers from Monday to Friday and also be made available at airports, airlines, hotels and several other sales outlets throughout the country, said Therese Mills, CEO and editor in-chief of T&T's Newsday.

Gannett Co.'s USA Today will impose an unpaid leave for about 1,500 employees before July, in order to reduce cost and counter advertising and circulation sales downturn, according to a memo to staff, Bloomberg reported.

 

According to the publisher, David Hunke, in the memo, a pay halt started in February 2009 will be extended by at least 90 days.

Penn State University is launching a pilot programme in a partnership with USA Today, which distributes its "e-edition" of the publication to all students, faculty and staff, the Daily Collegian reported.

Students can also choose to sign up and receive their e-edition through "Campus Buzz," an e-mail notification.
