Independent News and Media's newspapers have returned to pre-tax profits after selling loss-making titles, The Irish Times reported today. Revenues for the first half of the year reached €656.5 million, up 7.8 percent, as operating profit increased 29.2 percent, to €94.6 million. Earnings before taxes, amortisation and depreciation were up 26.1 percent, to €115.6 million.

The Ireland-based INM sold its UK Independent and Independent on Sunday titles in April, and also sold its remaining share in India-based Jagran Prakashan Limited media group, lowering its net debt by €360.1 million in the period from June 2009 to June 2010. INM reported pre-tax losses of €31 million for the year of 2009, according to MediaGuardian.

The E.W. Scripps Co. Monday reported its second-quarter revenue and net income up, and said its trends are expected to improve through the second half of the year, according to the Associated Press article posted on Business Week.

The Cincinnati-based company's net income reached $99.5 million, or $1.56 per share, in the second quarter, up from $2.3 million, or 4 cents per share, year-over-year, Market Watch reported.

 

McClatchy Co. reported an 83 percent profit decline in the second quarter as the company suffered from both advertising and circulation downturn, Reuters reported.

Net income dropped to $7.3 million, or 9 cents a share, from $42.2 million, or 50 cents a share, year-over-year. Revenue fell to $342 million from $365.3 million, the Associated Press reported.

 

A.H. Belo Corp., the publisher of The Dallas Morning News, The Providence Journal and many others, Monday announced its second-quarter loss was smaller year-to-year, but its ad revenue was still in a decline, the Associated Press reported.

The company's net loss in the second quarter totaled $171,000, or 1 cent a share, much less than that of $7.1 million, or 34 cents a share, one year ago.

 

The New York Times Co. posted its quarterly revenue up slightly, the first increase in quarterly revenue since the quarter of 2007, as digital advertising increased at double digits and helped offset the downturn of print advertising, AFP reported.

Its second-quarter revenue increased to $589.6 million from $584.5 million one year ago. Net income was down a little, to $32 million, or 21 cents a share, from $39.1 million, or 27 cents, year-over-year, according to a company statement.

 

Gannett Co. announced Friday that its second-quarter profit up more than double, thanks to the bounce-back of broadcast revenue, tax gain as well as the ease of print ad downturn. However, its share tumbled as much as 11 percent soon after the report release due to unexpected declined in revenue, Reuters reported.

Gannett's profit in the second quarter reached $195.5 million, or 81 cents per share, up from $70.5 million, or 30 cents per share, a year earlier, which exceeded Wall Street's forecasts. However, its revenue dropped by about 1.5 percent to $1.37 billion, with publishing revenue down 6 percent. It failed to meet analyst's expectation of $1.40 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Henri Pigeat, former president of Agence France Presse and current president of CFPJ (Centre de Formation et de Perfectionnement des Journalistes) revealed in a video interview with daily French paper Le Figaro that the AFP would be needing between €130 and €150 million for the next five years. The figures consist of estimations and Pigeat noted that there was no concrete business plan yet. 

Media General Inc. announced Wednesday that its Q1 loss narrowed year-over-year on reduced expenses and the growth on its TV business, The Associated Press reported.

The loss for Q1 was US$16.7 million, or 75 cents per share, better than that of $21.3 million, or 96 cents per share, in the same quarter one year ago.

Prominent French outlet Le Monde needs €125 million to get out of its debt condition, according to Electron Libre. The group must return €70 million in redeemable bonds, insure €30 million of its working capital and cover its €25 deficit. Le Nouvel Observateur suggested that Le Monde might "disappear" unless a solution is found by June 2010.

The Washington Post Co. announced Wednesday that its fourth-quarter profit increased to $82.2 million, or $8.71 a share, more than quadruple year-over-year. This gain is mostly due to a big reduction in accounting charges and the strong growth of its education division and the cable television business. The newspaper division was profitable after cutting employees, according to the Associated Press article posted on The New York Times.

Overall 4Q revenue increased 6 percent to $1.63 billion, up from $1.24 billion one year previous, Editor and Publisher reported.

Agora SA, the largest publisher in Poland, was back to profit in the fourth quarter, after the loss one year pervious was due to a takeover writedown, Bloomberg reported.

Net income totaled 14.9 million zloty, or US$5.1 million, up from a net loss of 30.7 million zloty a year earlier, the company statement said.

Online news outlets in France will receive €20 million in funding for 2009, with "traditional" news sites getting a larger portion, Le Monde reported today. "For the first time" online outlets would have the same access as newspapers do to receive help from the state even though the majority of the money would go towards "traditional" press publications.

The first meeting of the commission that equally represents both sides took place on December 21. The commission, whose task is to allocate the funding accordingly, looked at 18 cases out of the 70 it received. A number of Internet-only news sites would benefit from the subsidies, Le Monde said.
